Kananook Creek – January 2017

It was a very overcast, windy day as we met behind the Riviera Hotel. A group of Girl Guides were also launching to paddle down the creek for the Waterfront Festival. We decided to go upstream as many of the group hadn’t been that way before. Stephen, Brian & Martin came with their own craft. All of our Dolphin kayaks were in use as we passed through the sluice gates and headed towards the railway line. Stephen lead the way through the tunnel and soon we were passing under the Eel Race Road bridge. The fresh breeze was now behind us and we soon passed the Patterson River Secondary College. We passed near the pumping station to gather together in deciding whether to continue further on. We did go on and under the Old Wells Rd. Bridge & the Freeway bridges into the start of the much narrower Boggey Creek. On turning for home we experienced a very strong headwind which challenged us for over 30 mins. An eel was spotted by Carol,  ducks and a white faced heron were also seen. We returned after a strenuous 1 hour 45 minute paddle.Tony packed up the club trailer & took it back to his place. Thanks to all for another great day on the water.      Dennis.
